Could Baldur’s Gate 3’s Impact Spark a Pillars of Eternity Comeback?

Even in 2025, gamers are still showering praise on Larian Studios for the phenomenal success of Baldur’s Gate 3. With the recent release of Patch 8—featuring 12 brand-new classes and a comprehensive Photo Mode—the game continues to evolve, setting a benchmark for RPG design. Many now argue that the future of role-playing games will take cues from this Dungeons & Dragons-inspired epic, and for some, this evolution could open the door for the return of the legendary Pillars of Eternity series.

Dave Oshry, co-founder of New Blood Interactive, recently spoke about this possibility on the Quad Damage podcast (via GamesRadar+). Despite the gaming industry’s historic reluctance to fund deep CRPGs, Oshry sees the success of Larian as a turning point. “Josh [Sawyer, creator of Pillars of Eternity and Fallout: New Vegas] is really eager to make Pillars of Eternity 3. I’d absolutely love to see it happen,” he remarked during the discussion.

“We’re living in a post-Baldur’s Gate 3 world. It’s proven that players aren’t dumb—they don’t want mindless RPGs. You can absolutely sell 50 million copies of a deep, complex CRPG that takes months to complete,” Oshry added. For him, this proves there’s a viable market, and he believes Microsoft should step in and fund Pillars of Eternity 3.

Josh Sawyer Already Has Ideas for a Sequel

This isn’t the first time the idea of a new Pillars of Eternity has surfaced. In fact, Josh Sawyer himself has openly shared his interest in returning to the franchise. Though he admits to feeling somewhat “detached” from the genre lately, he’s been considering a new twist on the concept—something akin to Pillars of Eternity Tactics. While nothing has been formally announced yet, fans continue to hold out hope that the iconic RPG series might one day make its long-awaited return.
