The closed alpha of Bungie’s game was supposed to start next week, but a few things have already leaked out.
A massive ghost ship hangs in low orbit over a lost colony on Tau Ceti IV. The 30,000 souls who called that place home have vanished without a trace. Strange signals point to mysterious artifacts, long-dormant AI, and treasure troves of untold riches. Become a runner in Bungie’s upcoming sci-fi PvP extraction shooter, Marathon. You are a cybernetic mercenary venturing into the unknown in a fight for survival and fortune, where every run can lead to greatness. Players team up in crews of three as they battle rival runner teams and hostile security forces for weapons and upgrades. Survive and everything you’ve scavenged will be yours for future runs on Tau Ceti IV – or, if you’re brave enough, a trip to the abandoned Marathon ship that hangs above.
Welcome to Tau Ceti IV, a lost colony whose inhabitants vanished without a trace. Rival factions vie for the resources left behind, hiring runners who’ve shed their human form for biosynthetic husks. Death is only a hurdle in this cutthroat competition, where power, wealth, and answers to the mysteries of Tau Ceti IV hang in the balance. Choose from a roster of cybernetic mercenaries with unique abilities. Players customize their runner’s play style with the weapons, implants, and equipment they collect along the way. Strategize, execute, and become Tau Ceti’s most feared mercenary. Bungie’s premier first-person shooter sets the stage for a unique blend of tactical and fast-paced action, where every run is a tense competition for the big score. Season 1 will feature endgame challenges, ranked play, seasonal storylines, community events and more.
But what exactly is this leak? Last week, Bungie announced when Marathon would be released. At that time, it was announced that the closed alpha would start on April 23rd. However, Sony’s studio has already started leaking the code, and as a result, the intro trailer and the song you hear under the menu have already appeared online, which is a nice reminder of the original Marathon.
Marathon will be released on September 23rd for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. It will be fully cross-play and cross-save, so you can transfer your saves between platforms (presumably with a PlayStation Network account).
