After a recently completed challenge, the Japanese company is now asking for time to review who they think played fair and who didn’t…
Monster Hunter Wilds has just completed its first limited-time Challenge Mission, which allowed hunters to compete in a world ranking for the fastest kill time in a hunt against Doshaguma for bragging rights and cosmetic rewards. Unsurprisingly, the leaderboards were quickly flooded with cheaters posting impossibly fast hunt times. Capcom said it would begin a review of the leaderboards to crack down on users posting illegal times.
Prior to the release of the mission in question (Doshaguma of the Hollow), Capcom said it would take action against accounts involved in fraudulent ranking activity. Considering how easy it is to download a few mods from Nexus Mods to make things easier, it wasn’t very clear how serious Capcom was. On Steam, Capcom has posted a statement saying that the Japanese company is conducting its own investigation, but it’s unclear what that means. In the past, Capcom has turned a blind eye to Monster Hunter modding, so it’s hard to say what kind of telemetry the studio can gather about what software modifications players are running. (Denuvo…?) However, on a page warning about unauthorized data modification in Monster Hunter Wilds, Capcom said it plans to introduce additional countermeasures to detect users involved in unauthorized modification of game data in future updates.
“The Doshaguma of the Hollow Challenge quest ended today. Final ladder results for this quest will be confirmed during a 1-2 week review period beginning today. Event rewards will be distributed after any fraudulent claims have been investigated and excluded. Once the review is complete, we will announce the results on our Twitter accounts. In addition to judging based on clear times, we will also conduct our own investigations and take appropriate action. If we exclude the fraudulent clear times, we will also place restrictions on those accounts. From that point on, the user’s clear time will not be registered in the ladder and they will not receive the event rewards. In addition, we have taken and will continue to take action to ban accounts that are found to be cheating in our reviews. In addition, if you are certain that a player is engaging in prohibited actions, please report them. To report a player, navigate to their hunter profile screen and select Report. Thank you to all of our hunters for your skill and perseverance! See you on the hunt!” Capcom wrote.
The only question is what the consequences will be.
