Myth: A Remaster of Bungie’s Fantasy Tactical Series!

But they weren’t created by Bungie itself, as the Sony-owned studio is currently working on the reboot of Marathon…

There are still those who prefer Bungie’s other early hit series, Myth, to Marathon. Myth is a precise fantasy tactical game in which you must lead a team at a great disadvantage to victory against seemingly impossible odds. The games were never released digitally, but that doesn’t bother fans of the franchise much. For the most dedicated fans, Easter Sunday saw their resurrection with the release of Myth: Twice Born Edition, Myth: The Fallen Lords, Myth 2: Soulblighter, the community-led Chimera expansion, and a comprehensive remaster of many more games.

The project is unofficial, but was created with the help and approval of several original Bungie staff members, and features key artwork by original Bungie artist Mark R. Bernal. Nightdive would charge money for something like this. According to project lead Christopher “Jon God” Lyles-Arthur, the project was at one point going to be released through Nightdive, but Myth’s rights holder Take-Two backed out. But they didn’t abandon the project, they’re releasing it for free, it’s true, there are some steps we have to take.

The Community Remaster requires a little download and assembly. First, you need a copy of Myth 2: Soulblighter. No installation is required, just create a Myth library and copy the tags and cutscenes libraries from the disk. You can then download the latest version of the Project Magma modern engine port (currently 1.8.5), install it, and point it to the Myth directory with the tags and cutscenes folders in it. Then we can download the main files for the Twice Born Edition. All you have to do is unzip them and put the HD Megapack files in the Myth\Plugins folder, and optionally the HD High Contrast file, which makes some sprites (arrows, spears, and some pickups) a bit more visible on the battlefield.

If you’re only interested in Myth 2, you can start here, but you might also want to get the Myth: The Fallen Lords Deluxe files. This is a rebalanced and improved version of the Myth 1 campaign, ported to the sequel’s engine, but there is also a direct port. Again, just unzip the main file into the plugins folder. For the scenes, check if they are interlaced (you can choose; we link to de-interlaced in the third TotalCodex link), then unzip them into the Myth\Cutscenes folder. You may want to use QT Lite, a codec pack, to make the scenes visible if you get black by default. Chimera is part sequel, part expansion, made by the community in close collaboration with Bungie. It also received all the graphical improvements of the Twice Born Edition update.

With it, we’re treated to three extensive campaigns and a sophisticated multiplayer scene.
