MOVIE NEWS – Millie Bobby Brown has steadily risen to become Netflix’s ultimate leading lady, skyrocketing to fame thanks to her breakout performance in the sci-fi horror series Stranger Things. She continued her creative partnership with the streaming giant by starring in the 2020 mystery film Enola Holmes, an adaptation of Nancy Springer’s books focusing on Sherlock Holmes’ daring younger sister solving intricate cases.
Enola Holmes quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched original films, drawing in over 76 million households. Its 2022 sequel achieved similar success, both critically and commercially, helping establish a solid fan-favorite franchise. In November 2024, a third film was officially announced, promising another thrilling adventure for Enola; here’s everything we know about Enola Holmes 3 so far.
Millie Bobby Brown is back as the clever and spirited Enola Holmes in the newly announced threequel, alongside many familiar faces from the beloved mystery series. Henry Cavill returns as Sherlock Holmes, the legendary older brother whose towering reputation Enola often struggles to escape. Helena Bonham Carter also reprises her role as Eudoria, the quirky and loving matriarch of the Holmes family.
At the end of Enola Holmes 2, a mid-credits scene introduced Dr. John Watson, Sherlock’s trusted companion, answering an ad for a roommate. Watson will be portrayed by Himesh Patel, known for his performances in EastEnders, Damned, Station Eleven, and films like Yesterday and Don’t Look Up.
Louis Partridge returns as Tewkesbury, Enola’s devoted friend and love interest, while Sharon Duncan-Brewster will reprise her role as Moriarty, Sherlock’s archnemesis who caused chaos under the alias Mira Troy in the second movie. After escaping police custody, she is expected to continue to challenge the Holmes siblings.
What Will the Threequel Be About?
The highly anticipated third film will take Enola to the European island nation of Malta, where her personal and professional dreams collide in a case more tangled and dangerous than anything she has faced before. Based on Nancy Springer’s beloved young adult series, Netflix is wasting no time in leveraging Millie Bobby Brown’s star power to keep the franchise alive. According to director Philip Barantini, the new installment will adopt a darker, more mature tone compared to the previous entries.
While the first two films were directed by Harry Bradbeer, Enola Holmes 3 will be helmed by Philip Barantini, known for his intense, single-take projects like 2021’s Boiling Point and Netflix’s 2025 miniseries Adolescence. According to Deadline, Barantini pitched a much darker direction for the third movie, with sources stating he wants it to “do for the Enola Holmes franchise what Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban did for the Harry Potter series.”
The script is being written by Jack Thorne, who also penned the first two Enola Holmes films and has credits including Wonder and the upcoming Tron: Ares. Thorne previously collaborated with Barantini on Adolescence and is currently working on a small screen adaptation of Lord of the Flies.
When Will ‘Enola Holmes 3’ Be Released?
Netflix has not yet announced an official release date for Enola Holmes 3, but filming began on April 10, 2025, in England and Malta. Given the franchise’s previous fast-paced production schedules, fans can likely expect a swift turnaround, as the adventures of Enola continue to charm audiences worldwide. Millie Bobby Brown remains Netflix’s crown jewel, having also starred in originals like Damsel and The Electric State, and will say goodbye to the juggernaut series Stranger Things later this year.
