PlatinumGames Refuses to Quit: After Babylon’s Fall Disaster, They’re Already Building a New Online Action Game!

It flopped and became one of the biggest failures of 2022, but the creators of Babylon’s Fall are already hard at work on another similar project. PlatinumGames is currently hiring a designer with experience creating online-based action titles.

For many players, Babylon’s Fall is remembered as one of the worst games of 2022. Although it caught some attention thanks to being developed by PlatinumGames ( Bayonetta, NieR: Automata ) with the support of Square Enix, its heavy focus on online co-op failed to convince the gaming community. And even though the team is fully aware of its disastrous launch, it has not changed its course: they are already working on another game of the same genre.

According to a first report from Tech4gamers, PlatinumGames has posted a job opening revealing a few hints about the next project. The Japanese studio is seeking a designer skilled “in developing online action games” and “level design for online or open-field games.” Based on this description, it’s very likely that the project is still in its early stages.

Still, the existence of this new title shouldn’t surprise anyone. Many assumed that PlatinumGames and Square Enix would reconsider diving back into online action territory after Babylon’s Fall’s humiliating failure. However, VGC reminds us that Atsushi Inaba, CEO of PlatinumGames, previously confirmed the company’s commitment to GaaS (Games as a Service) even after the catastrophe. “We’ve learned a lot from this experience, but it hasn’t changed our plans or outlook toward games as a service. It’s absolutely an area we want to invest in and grow,” Inaba said at the time.

PlatinumGames CEO apologizes for Babylon’s Fall release

While Babylon’s Fall launched back in 2022, its wounds are still fresh at PlatinumGames. It was a GaaS project whose active player count on PC dropped below 10 at times, leading to server shutdowns within a year of its release. The situation was so disastrous that Inaba personally apologized for launching the game. Despite everything, the teams are not giving up and are still determined to create an online title that the community will finally embrace.
