MOVIE NEWS – M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming psychological thriller, Remain, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, now has an official release date. Based on an upcoming novel by Nicholas Sparks, the film is set to debut in theaters on October 23, 2026, distributed by Warner Bros. Shyamalan co-developed the story, and the cast also includes Phoebe Dynevor and Ashley Walters.
M. Night Shyamalan is preparing another mind-bending addition to his repertoire with Remain, a psychological thriller headlined by Jake Gyllenhaal and based on a forthcoming book by Nicholas Sparks. While this isn’t another serial killer tale like Trap, Shyamalan fans can still expect his trademark plot twists and psychological depth.
Warner Bros. has locked in the release of Remain for October 23, 2026. The film will feature Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play) and Ashley Walters (Adolescence) alongside Gyllenhaal. The movie will go head-to-head with Jordan Peele’s upcoming feature from Universal. Shyamalan’s return to WB had been expected due to his first-look agreement with the studio. Remain follows 2024’s Trap, which earned over $86 million on a $30 million budget. With production likely starting later this year, expect more casting announcements soon.
The story of Remain originates from a novel co-developed by Sparks and Shyamalan, slated for release on October 7 this year. Early plot details already give fans a glimpse into its themes. Gyllenhaal plays Tate Donovan, an architect from New York who seeks a new beginning in Cape Cod after undergoing psychiatric treatment. There, he encounters a mysterious woman played by Dynevor—originally, the role was planned for Alicia Vikander. Here’s the official synopsis:
‘Remain’ Is a “One-Of-A-Kind Collaboration” Between Creative Minds
Remain, co-created by Shyamalan and Sparks, follows New York architect Tate Donovan as he moves to Cape Cod to design his best friend’s summer home. Fresh out of a psychiatric hospital where he was treated for acute depression, Donovan is looking for a clean slate. Still reeling from the loss of his sister, he meets Wren—a woman who forces him to question the rigid logic that once governed his life.
Even though Shyamalan and Sparks wrote their respective versions independently, the film has been described as a rare collaboration between two renowned storytellers. Shyamalan’s involvement in the novel was significant enough that he received a cover credit. “Working with M. Night Shyamalan has been a career highlight,” Sparks said. According to the book’s description, their blend of supernatural intrigue and emotional drama explores the mysteries of life, death, and human connection.
“A one-of-a-kind novel that grapples with the supernatural mysteries of life, death, and human connection—an unprecedented collaboration between the globally bestselling author of love stories like The Notebook and the renowned writer and director of blockbuster thrillers like The Sixth Sense.”
