This phrase may sound unusual, but it is justified: our gecko hero uses his tail to attack his enemies, often saying “it’s tail time”.
Limited Run Games has announced the release date of Gex Trilogy. Pre-orders for the physical edition start today and will be available through the company’s online store until July 6. The base edition will cost $40 and includes the game on disc or cartridge, in a case with cover art and a manual. On PC, instead of a disc, only a Steam key will be provided. The Classic Edition will cost $75 and adds a Steelbook, a 12″ x 16″ (30.48 x 40.64 cm) double-sided poster, a soundtrack selection disc, and a retro-style box.
Then there’s the Tail Time Edition, which is the collector’s edition priced at $200. In addition to the Classic Edition contents, it includes a 36″ (91.44 cm) inflatable Gex doll, a 7″ (17.78 cm) Gex figurine, a few cards, a pin, a full soundtrack CD (in addition to the selection), and a collector’s box featuring artwork by Yoshitaka Amano.
The Gex franchise dates back over 30 years, having first launched on the 3DO on April 7, 1995. Developed by Crystal Dynamics, the game was a hit and essentially made the gecko the platform’s mascot. Depending on region, the 2D platformer later arrived on PS1 and SEGA Saturn in late 1995 or spring 1996, and on PC by the end of 1996. Dana Gould, who also voiced Gex in later episodes (in the North American versions), contributed to the game as a writer.
In 1998, the 3D sequel Gex: Enter the Gecko was released for PS1, N64, PC, and Game Boy Color (Europe saw the GBC version in February 1999). There was a change in voice actor: in Europe, Leslie Philips voiced the loud-mouthed gecko, and in Japan, it was Mitsuo Senda. In 1999, Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko arrived for PS1, Game Boy Color, and N64 (with a European release in July 2000).
Gex Trilogy includes all three titles. The digital edition launches on June 16 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The physical version will be shipped to customers later this year.
