Dune: Awakening Devs Admit Their Mistake – All Pre-Orders Now Get Beta Access

MOVIE NEWS – The creators of Dune: Awakening have changed course: everyone who pre-ordered now gets access to the weekend beta. While that wasn’t the original plan, fan backlash forced Funcom to adjust its approach.

Dune: Awakening is shaping up to be the next big thing in survival MMOs. Developed by Funcom, the studio behind Conan Exiles, the game will immerse players in the deadly deserts of Arrakis, where they’ll face giant sandworms and build shelter to survive. Slated for release in early June, fans eager to test it ahead of time now have a reason to celebrate.

Shortly after the weekend began, Funcom made a surprising announcement: everyone who pre-ordered Dune: Awakening will now get instant beta access—no lottery necessary. The change came after criticism from fans who argued it was unfair to pay €50 and still not be guaranteed a beta slot. “Everyone who pre-ordered Dune: Awakening can now also access the weekend beta,” the studio wrote on social media.

“We’ve heard your feedback on this. If you already own or decide to pre-order any of the editions this weekend, you should also see a beta in your Steam library now,” Funcom added. According to PC Gamer, the company had made tens of thousands of beta keys available through various channels, but eventually realized they needed to prioritize paying customers.

Dune: Awakening and the servers

Dune: Awakening officially launches on June 10, and as with any MMO, players are naturally concerned about server stability. But Funcom is confident. “We certainly anticipate a lot of load at launch, and that’s why we’re preparing. There will be thousands of clustered servers spread across the world available at launch. This isn’t our first project; we’ve launched several MMOs and survival games over the past 25 years and have a robust set of tools and processes in place, managed by an experienced operations team,” the studio explained in a Steam post.
