Devil May Cry: Kamiya Wouldn’t Say No to Remaking the First Game!

Since he created the IP (which originally started as a concept for Resident Evil 4), and since his successor has since left Capcom, the Japanese veteran’s offer could come in handy.

Hideki Kamiya has once again partnered with Capcom to work on the surprise sequel to Okami, but that’s not the only project he’s interested in. Back in February, he answered a fan question on his YouTube channel: would he remake the first Devil May Cry, which he directed? He said yes — and in a recent video, he also added that Viewtiful Joe is another title he’d love to recreate.

He’s ready to return to Devil May Cry

“As for a Devil May Cry remake, of course I’d love to do that. I usually don’t replay my own games after they’re released, and Devil May Cry is no exception. But every once in a while, I see gameplay clips and think, ‘Yeah, that really feels like 24-year-old game design.’ Of course, with today’s technology and game design approach, I’d like to remake it from scratch. If that ever happens… well, I don’t think seriously about it until it actually happens, so I don’t have anything in mind right now. But when the time comes, I’ll come up with something. That’s what I do! So Capcom, leave it to me! And let me handle Viewtiful Joe, too!” said Kamiya.

It’s not just about Devil May Cry

His answer isn’t surprising — he clearly doesn’t mind being asked about it. In fact, it gives him another opportunity to publicly remind Capcom (and anyone listening) that he wants to return to Devil May Cry, a franchise that Hideaki Itsuno took over from the second installment. Itsuno, however, left Capcom last year and is now working at Tencent’s LightSpeed Studios.

Beyond Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe, Kamiya has also said he’d like to work on Scalebound again if given the chance — but Microsoft owns the IP rights, so it’s out of his hands…
