TECH NEWS – DFC Intelligence claims that Nintendo’s next-gen console may be the most significant hardware launch in gaming history, especially after the delay of Grand Theft Auto VI.
DFC Intelligence, one of the gaming industry’s leading market research firms, has released an updated forecast for the Nintendo Switch 2. The firm raised its projected sales figures for the console to 16 million units by the end of 2025 — up from a previous estimate of 15 million. The adjustment reflects Nintendo’s historically conservative sales projections. Case in point: the original Switch was expected to sell 10 million units in its first year but ended up reaching 15 million instead.
While demand might even support 20 million units sold in the first year, DFC believes production limitations will likely keep that number out of reach — hence the 16 million prediction.
Without GTA VI, the Switch 2 Becomes Even More Crucial
With the Grand Theft Auto VI launch now postponed to May 26, 2026, DFC argues that the release of Nintendo’s new console has taken on even greater importance for the industry. In fact, the firm goes as far as calling it “arguably the most important console launch ever.” The highly anticipated GTA VI would have significantly bolstered PS5 and Xbox Series hardware sales, but with that driver removed, DFC is now predicting a drop in overall game sales across North America and Europe in 2025. Specifically, North America is expected to see a 2% decline, while Europe’s figures are projected to remain flat compared to 2024.
In contrast, Japan is forecast to enjoy a 25% increase in console software revenues this year, thanks largely to Nintendo’s aggressive pricing strategy for the domestic version of the Switch 2. Japanese gamers will be able to pick up the region-locked model for just 49,980 yen (roughly $342), a much lower price than in other markets. With Japan factored in, DFC predicts a global 3% increase in console sales for 2025.
Looking ahead, DFC projects the Switch 2 could surpass 100 million units sold by the end of 2029, positioning it as the dominant console platform worldwide. Nintendo is reportedly marketing the device as a primary gaming system and could become a preferred partner for leading third-party publishers.
As for the broader industry outlook, DFC expects GTA VI to spark a new wave of growth between 2026 and 2029, likely setting new records in hardware and software sales across the board.
