Switch 2 VRR Confusion: Nintendo Walks Back TV Mode Support with an Apology

“We apologize,” says Nintendo, who admitted its mistake after fans pointed it out. Contrary to what was initially stated, the Switch 2 will not support VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) while docked. The feature is exclusive to handheld mode.

Nintendo has been steadily releasing more and more information about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, including launch titles, hardware specs, and sales expectations. But eagle-eyed fans recently spotted a quiet revision to the official website, leading to suspicion over the console’s support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). Nintendo has now confirmed: it was a mistake.

After unveiling the Switch 2 back in April, Nintendo updated its official site with a rundown of the system’s features. Initially, it stated that VRR would work in both handheld and docked modes. But users soon noticed that the mention of VRR had vanished from the section about docked features when connected to a TV.

Nintendo has now clarified the issue in a statement to Nintendo Life: “Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR only in handheld mode. Incorrect information was previously listed on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error.” Asked whether a future update might bring VRR to docked mode, the company replied: “We have nothing to announce on this matter.”

What Exactly Is VRR Technology?

VRR has become a must-have feature for players wanting smooth visuals. The technology, found in some modern TVs and monitors, adjusts the screen’s refresh rate to match the frame rate of the game, reducing screen tearing and stuttering. It helps provide a more fluid gameplay experience—but for Switch 2, it’ll only be available when playing in handheld mode.
