Avowed Director Leaves Obsidian After 12 Years – Heads to New Studio

After nearly 12 years at Obsidian Entertainment and directing one of the studio’s most ambitious fantasy RPGs, Carrie Patel is moving on. Despite recently expressing interest in expanding the world of Avowed, she’s now joining the Netflix-owned Night School Studio.

Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment’s grand fantasy RPG, launched in February 2025. Though it didn’t become a blockbuster, players praised its open world—heavily inspired by the Pillars of Eternity universe—its magic-meets-melee combat, and rich narrative. Much of its success can be attributed to Carrie Patel, whose direction helped shape the title into what fans appreciated on Game Pass.

Patel, who was also a narrative designer on The Outer Worlds, has officially parted ways with Obsidian after nearly twelve years. Her next chapter will be with Night School Studio, creators of Oxenfree and Afterparty, which now operates under Netflix Games. While the studio hasn’t made a formal announcement, Patel’s LinkedIn confirms her departure from Obsidian, where she spent over a decade.

Avowed’s Visionary Director Moves On

Reportedly, she will take on a leadership role as studio director, though no details have surfaced about what the next project might be. The move surprised many players, particularly after Patel said just weeks ago: “Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, I would love for us to do more in it.”

Obsidian recently shared its roadmap for Avowed through 2025, with more updates still coming. At the same time, the team is working on The Outer Worlds 2, which is slated to launch later this year and will be showcased during the June Xbox Showcase. Though Patel’s departure is significant, it doesn’t appear to affect the studio’s upcoming plans.
