People Can Fly Dumps Two More Projects, And This Means More Layoffs!

The Polish studio has been struggling lately, though they can’t be called “developers with a wooden hand.”

People Can Fly has decided to halt development on two additional projects. One, codenamed Project Gemini, was to be published by Square Enix, while the other, Project Bifrost, was to be self-published by the Polish team and set in virtual reality. These cancellations have unfortunately led to layoffs, as the work of the affected employees is no longer needed. CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski explained the decision in a statement:

“Today, we made the very difficult decision to suspend development on Project Gemini and Project Bifrost. The relevant current reports have already been shared with the market. The reason for suspending Project Gemini is that the publisher did not present us with the draft of the subsequent content rider attached to the publishing agreement, which would cover the terms of further milestones, and the publisher has not communicated whether it wants to continue or terminate the project. Project Bifrost was suspended due to the above, as well as an analysis of the group’s cash flow, which showed no prospects for securing the organizational resources and funds needed to continue developing and releasing the project. As a result, we must reorganize significantly as a studio and reduce our teams, which is the most painful part of this situation. We want to express our deepest regret and sadness at how these events have unfolded, and our sincere gratitude to everyone for their contributions so far” – wrote Wojciechowski.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen similar events in the history of the developers of Painkiller, Outriders, or, if you include their co-development work, Bulletstorm, Gears of War: Judgment, and Gears of War: E-Day. Most recently, Project Dagger was canceled. That makes three projects canceled recently, which doesn’t bode well for the future of the Polish studio.
