The studio he helped found is pursuing him for a 2024 misconduct and is demanding justice to tell his story. Dino Patti, co-founder of Playdead (creators of Limbo and Inside), says his former team is trying to end his legacy.
The legacy of one of the most influential indie studios of recent years is now at stake. Playdead’s co-founder has revealed that the studio he helped create is suing him in a copyright and legal battle, putting Dino Patti in a very difficult position that may even threaten his reputation.
Patti, who founded Playdead with Arnt Jensen in 2006, told Game Developer that the studio is pushing ahead with a lawsuit started in 2024. He says the issue began last year when he posted a development photo from Limbo on LinkedIn, which supposedly belonged to Arnt Jensen, prompting the legal case.
As a result, he’s being asked to pay 500,000 Danish kroner (about $77,000) in compensation and is facing a formal warning for using the studio’s intellectual property years ago. In a recent interview with Danish site Arkaden, Patti says this isn’t the first time Playdead and its lawyers have tried to take him to court; he claims relations have only worsened since he left in 2017.
What Happened Since Leaving Limbo Studio?
Patti left Playdead in 2017 and later founded Jumpship, the studio behind Somerville (2022). But instead of easing the relationship, Patti claims Playdead and Jensen have repeatedly tried to minimize or erase his name from the studio’s story, including notable changes to the credits in new versions of Limbo, like the Switch edition.
Playdead, on the other hand, claims Patti is exaggerating his creative input on these projects and that his public statements breach confidentiality agreements. In a legal letter, they argue Patti “gives the false impression of having played a significant role” in development, and claim he claims creative roles he didn’t really have. They also accuse him of using Playdead’s internal assets commercially since leaving.
Patti stands firm: he hopes the trial will let him present his side without fear. “The good thing is that journalists will have access to everything that happens,” he said. “I will not hold anything back; I’ll be legally required to show all images and materials proving what happened.”
