The Skyrim-based Oblivion fan-remaster is about to erase one of the most hated aspects of the classic RPG—a huge relief for anyone who ever loathed its tedious dungeons. The Skyblivion devs are convinced the original game’s dungeons offer no real reward, so they’re redesigning them from the ground up.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a true RPG legend, but its dungeon design has been infamous for all the wrong reasons. Most dungeons end with no boss, no loot, no reward, and force players to slog back the way they came—no shortcut, no payoff. Skyblivion, a massive fan mod, is fixing every one of those pain points for a new generation.
Not familiar with Skyblivion? It’s an ambitious Skyrim mod rebuilding the entire Oblivion adventure from scratch. The dev team knows Bethesda and Virtuos released Oblivion Remastered in Unreal Engine 5, but Skyblivion aims to be something entirely different. Project lead Rebelzize told PC Gamer exactly how in a new interview.
“For a lot of people, Oblivion is pretty frustrating these days,” he says. “That old design is still there in Bethesda’s remaster, but we’ve changed that. It’s one of Skyblivion’s biggest advantages.” The team believes “we still have plenty to offer [with Skyblivion], since we’ve basically reworked every major aspect.”
Skyblivion Nearing the Finish Line
Plenty assumed the arrival of Oblivion Remastered spelled the end for Skyblivion, but the devs—supported by Bethesda—pressed on, and now the mod is “almost finished!” According to Rebelzize, Skyblivion goes further than any official remaster: “Oblivion looks great from a distance thanks to those lush forests, but up close, there’s usually nothing between City A and City B.”
Skyblivion won’t be a simple copy: every part is being rebuilt for a richer, more modern experience. “That’s the power of a true remake, and I hope this project will leave a mark on internet culture and Elder Scrolls fandom for years to come,” says Rebelzize.
