At the end of a Final Fantasy XIV broadcast, Naoki Yoshida and Kazutoyo Maehiro joked about bringing FF XVI to Nintendo’s upcoming console.
Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) and Kazutoyo Maehiro hinted at a possible Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XVI during the latest Letter from the Producer livestream for Final Fantasy XIV. Toward the end of the stream, the two discussed what’s next for the franchise, and Maehiro jokingly said he would “do everything he can” to bring the game to Nintendo’s new console. The title is currently available on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S – but not yet on any Nintendo platform.
Of course, Maehiro’s comment was made in a humorous context and does not constitute an official announcement. Still, it’s not the first time a Switch 2 port has been mentioned. A standard Nintendo Switch port is practically ruled out, as the game skipped both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – the 2017 hardware just can’t handle it.
Earlier this year, rumors already pointed to a Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XVI. And with confirmation that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is coming to Nintendo’s new platform, speculation is mounting that the full remake trilogy – and possibly more Square Enix titles – could be headed to the hybrid system as well.
It may still be a distant dream, but if Final Fantasy VII Remake can run on the Switch 2, and the rest of the series follows, then a port of Final Fantasy XVI isn’t out of the question. For now, fans will have to wait and see.
