PlayStation backed a major action title, but only one person initially spotted Stellar Blade’s potential: Shuhei Yoshida, the former PlayStation boss who pushed for a PS5 deal right after his first hands-on.
Sony doesn’t just pack the PS5 lineup with first-party exclusives and third-party releases; it also partners with external teams to bring standout projects to its console. That’s how Stellar Blade from South Korea’s Shift Up arrived, with the Japanese company stepping in as publisher. The partnership was set in motion by Yoshida’s conviction after his very first test session with Eve’s adventure.
Speaking to Minimap, Yoshida explained how he helped steer Stellar Blade to PS5 while sharing thoughts on South Korea’s dev scene. “I visited Shift Up between 2019 and 2020 after hearing a top-tier console game was being made in Korea,” he recalled. “To my surprise, the project was exceptionally high-quality across the board: 3D modeling, realism, graphics, action. When I played it, I found it elegant, polished, and genuinely fun.”
“What struck me most was the character design,” he added. “The team’s process of translating physical references into digital figures was meticulous and artistic. A colleague in third-party relations immediately said, ‘We absolutely want this on PlayStation,’ and I completely agreed. Back at the office I told the team, ‘This is a truly extraordinary game.’”
That first contact was enough to kick off a closer collaboration between PlayStation and Shift Up. Yoshida didn’t just see a potential hit in the hack-and-slash action game, but a spark for others: “If the game succeeds, it could encourage many Korean developers to chase their ambitions.” In turn, that could lead to more projects from studios in the country.
Stellar Blade 2 Is Coming
Stellar Blade became one of 2024’s biggest action releases. Eve’s journey resonated with players and later expanded beyond PlayStation to land on PC. Shift Up kept the momentum, shipping a hefty patch this year that, alongside tweaks and fixes, added three epilogues to the story.
What’s next? The studio isn’t leaving the universe behind. Work has already started on a sequel that aims to outdo the original across the board. There’s no release date yet, but the South Korean team estimates players could get their hands on it before 2027, giving action and sci-fi fans a fresh challenge to master.
