So here comes another game ready to support Nvidia’s newest upscaling tech, even if that technology still clearly needs more refinement.
One of the most hotly debated issues in the games industry over the past few years, and still today, is the role of generative artificial intelligence in development, or whether it should have any role at all. One of the latest developments to stir up serious controversy has been Nvidia DLSS 5. The technology probably will not have much impact on big releases due later this year, but projects aimed further into the future, such as Fragmentary Order, the new extraction shooter from Escape from Tarkov creator Nikita Buyanov, will likely be in a position to use it if they want to. In a new interview with GamesBeat, Buyanov and his new team at Rant Gaming Studio said that yes, they would use the technology if it is ready in time.
Nvidia’s DLSS technology has now effectively been adopted across the entire industry. Plenty of people still focus only on the downsides, but players have undeniably benefited from it in many ways. That does not mean DLSS 5 is already guaranteed the same kind of acceptance, because its generative AI elements continue to provoke debate. There will almost certainly always be players who see only the flaws. Even so, whether people like it or not, if a larger upcoming title from a prominent developer ends up embracing DLSS 5, that may do more for the technology’s industry-wide adoption than any amount of marketing ever could.
During the interview, Buyanov also seemed to take a shot at Arc Raiders, although that can also be read simply as an attempt to define his own game in direct contrast to it. When he was asked whether Fragmentary Order might incorporate some of the spontaneous gameplay that helped drive interest in Arc Raiders, Buyanov made it clear that his new game, just like Escape from Tarkov before it, does not want to resemble that at all.
“Yes, I think so. If it’s available, we’ll implement it. As for AI, if we can control it, we’ll try it. I’m more interested in other kinds of additions that can come through DLSS, not just a total reconstruction of the image. We need to see what it will actually be like. This technology has only just been made public. It still needs many more changes. Arc Raiders is an extraction shooter for casual players. That is not an option for us. We want to deliver the most painful, most difficult, and most rewarding experience”, Buyanov said.
At the very least, he is being honest. And that is worth appreciating.
