007 First Light: Love At First Sight With PSSR 2.0!

IO Interactive’s game will also utilize the enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler.

The studio announced on the PlayStation Blog that its upcoming game, 007 First Light, which recounts the origin story of James Bond, will launch on the PlayStation 5 Pro with the new PSSR 2.0 algorithm. The studio is using AMD FSR 3.1.5 on other console platforms, but PSSR 2.0 offers significant visual improvements on Sony’s mid-generation console upgrade.

“The upgraded PSSR gave us a meaningful jump in image quality across the board – cleaner, more stable, and noticeably sharper on the kind of fine detail that’s hardest to get right. It’s a clear upgrade for our PlayStation 5 Pro players,” said Henrik Schlichter, technical director at IO Interactive. “We integrated the upgraded PSSR in about a day and were happy with the results immediately. No per-scene tuning, no special-case work – it just held up across the whole game. That’s not something we get to say very often about a piece of new technology,” added Jon Rocatis, Principal Render Engineer at IO Interactive.

According to the developers, the most noticeable improvements can be seen in the dense vegetation of outdoor environments and in the close-up details of characters during cinematic moments. The enhanced PSSR also significantly reduces glare and flickering, providing a more coherent image, especially in scenes filled with fine geometry and high-frequency details.

On PC, players with Nvidia graphics cards can enable DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution and Dynamic Frame Generation to enjoy the best possible image quality. However, path tracing and DLSS Ray Reconstruction will only be available in a future update sometime this summer. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that the PlayStation 5 Pro version will be the best choice for the 007 First Light console experience.

007 First Light will be released on May 27 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. The Nintendo Switch 2 port, which IO Interactive says is already in good shape, is scheduled for release sometime in the third quarter (July-September).
