It’s no coincidence that we’ve been waiting years for this Square Enix game. Several years have passed with no concrete information about the project until now.
Square Enix has announced Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, which was originally announced in May 2021 under a different title. Dragon Quest XII: Beyond the Realms. The Japanese company has effectively rebooted the latest main installment of the veteran franchise by restarting development of the original concept announced in 2021 under a new organizational structure.
“We’re hard at work on XII, but due to a team reorganization and a development restart, it will take a bit longer to reach you. Work on the original version, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate hit a lot of hurdles along the way. However, as we continued to discuss the series with its creator, Mr. Yuji Horii, and determined what a mainline Dragon Quest game should entail, we decided to start over from scratch. It was a significant decision, but I believe it will ensure that the next Dragon Quest game is one that all fans of the series will love. As part of this new direction, we’ve also changed the game’s logo and subtitle. It’s a fantastic story. I wish we could tell you more, but the team would get angry, so let’s leave it at that,” explained executive producer Yosuke Saito.
“It’s the story of a young hero who’s beset by strange visions in their sleep. What lies beyond dreams? Surely not a world of darkness, but a bright and exciting future. The game has taken a different path than we originally announced, but I think you’re going to love it. All I’ll add is that Dragon Quest XII, like every game before it, will feature Akira Toriyama’s characters and Koichi Sugiyama’s music. That’s all I can say for now,” said Dragon Quest series creator and game designer Yuji Horii.
We’ll definitely have to wait another year or two for this, but at least the art style has stayed the same.
