When it comes to the Halo Studios remake, it’s important to clarify the situation if we were to run it on a PC.
The skepticism surrounding Halo: Campaign Evolved was well-founded, since the game opted for Unreal Engine 5 instead of the Slipspace Engine. Even an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 cannot achieve the high framerates expected at a 1440p resolution. In a new video – the first video below -, we saw a preview version running on a system with an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X 3D CPU and an RTX 5090. It ran at 1440p with Ultra settings and Nvidia DLAA – Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing – enabled, meaning no upscaling was used. Generally, it ran at 90-100 FPS. However, it only reached 120 FPS in enclosed indoor areas. This is significantly lower than what we might expect from the best GPU on the market, though it may improve by the time the game is released.
The official system requirements list an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU and 32 GB of RAM to achieve 4K/60 FPS on Ultra settings, but players will likely need to use upscaling technologies – Nvidia DLSS, AMD FSR, or Intel XeSS – to do so. Consequently, players with weaker hardware will likely need to lower their settings significantly and use more aggressive upscaling and frame generation to enjoy the game at a high framerate. Furthermore, Niles Sankey, a former Bungie veteran, pointed out that graphics produced by Unreal Engine can impair tactical clarity, a fundamental element of the original game.
Since games like Halo: Campaign Evolved are being released on older versions of Unreal Engine 5, they cannot take advantage of new developments, such as the new Lumen mode introduced in Unreal Engine 5.8. This mode aims to achieve 60 FPS even on lower-spec hardware, such as handheld PCs similar to Nintendo Switch 2. Hopefully, this and future engine updates will resolve the issue of poor performance and stuttering that has made Unreal Engine synonymous with it.
Although Halo: Campaign Evolved demands quite a bit of power at Ultra settings, a video from Digital Foundry – the second video below – shows that the game runs well on a number of systems, including handheld PCs like the Xbox ROG Ally X. The game launches on July 28 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
