If you play on a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 console, a new download is waiting for you. The original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2 have both received firmware version 22.5.0, a patch that does not overhaul the systems, but does add several convenience, security, and accessibility improvements.
Nintendo has released two firmware updates for the original Nintendo Switch and the newer Nintendo Switch 2 as part of its ongoing effort to refine the user experience, and both are now available for download. These are not massive patches with major changes for the hybrid consoles, but alongside the stability and performance improvements typical of this kind of update, both systems have received a few new features that should appeal to many players.
Let’s start with Nintendo’s new generation. According to Nintendo of America’s official website, the Switch 2 firmware patch mainly adds new accessibility features for a couple of languages while polishing the player experience through basic system improvements. The download, which brings users to version 22.5.0, is now available worldwide and will start automatically if the device is connected to the network.
- Dutch and Russian have been added as languages with “Text to speech” functionality in the Accessibility section.
- Dutch and Russian have been added as languages for the “Change Voice – Text during GameChat” option in the Accessibility section.
- General system stability improvements have been implemented to optimize the user experience.
Meanwhile, the update announced for the original Nintendo Switch also brings the device to version 22.5.0, but this patch includes a couple of extra features that will be of particular interest to those who spend a lot of time deciding on their next purchases in the Nintendo eShop. The system has also received stability improvements, but the eShop-related changes are more noticeable this time.
- The Nintendo eShop interface has been redesigned. The shop’s color will now reflect the player’s theme color if they have selected “Basic Dark” mode in the system settings.
- User verification with PIN has been added when accessing the Nintendo eShop and making purchases with payment methods saved on the system.
- The ability to rewind and fast-forward 10 seconds has been added to Nintendo eShop videos and News using the ZL and ZR buttons.
- General system stability improvements have been implemented to optimize the user experience.
Reactions to the Nintendo Direct Have Not Been Positive
Nintendo has also been in the news lately for taking part in the period popularly known as “Non-E3” with a new Nintendo Direct. The broadcast confirmed the existence of new Nintendo Switch 2 titles such as Xenoblade Genesis, Final Fantasy Resonance, and the highly anticipated remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but the overall quality of the presentation fell short of expectations.
This has not only been visible in user reactions on social media, but also on the stock market. Nintendo’s stock value experienced a 7.5% drop after the Nintendo Direct broadcast, and it has yet to fully recover. Ultimately, the community has been quite dissatisfied with the broadcast in general, especially because the eagerly awaited The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake was barely shown, appearing only in a very brief teaser.
