Sucker Punch’s PlayStation 5 exclusive – because there is surely no PC port coming for this one either – has delivered excellent results for Sony so far.
Last year’s Ghost of Yotei is currently the best-selling in-house PlayStation Studios title of the year: since release, it has reportedly sold nearly 5 million copies, and the estimated 1.1 million copies sold this year are carrying the weight of PlayStation’s first-party game portfolio. This is not the biggest surprise if we consider that PlayStation has only released Marathon and Saros this year. Both games received strong critical praise, but neither managed to become a commercial success. We have written extensively about Marathon’s problems, and last month Alinea Analytics claimed that Saros would have a hard time breaking even despite the thousands of Returnal fans who were present at launch.
But if we had told someone in January that Ghost of Yotei would be the game generating more revenue for PlayStation than any other recent release, they probably would have been surprised. PlayStation’s portfolio currently looks closer to the worst-case scenario for the first half of the year, and it is very likely not where management would like it to be. While Saros and Marathon are not delivering the expected results, the most consistent performer among PlayStation’s first-party games is Gran Turismo 7, which launched in 2022, two years after the PlayStation 5’s release. It is the latest installment in a series known for games that remain popular over the long term, but that does not make its ability to keep that reputation alive any less impressive.
In terms of copies sold so far in 2026, it even outpaces MLB The Show 26. Outside the top three, 2023’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Astro Bot round out the top five, while Saros sits in sixth place. Although Ghost of Yotei is selling fewer copies than its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, it is generating more revenue because it has maintained a higher price point for longer. But even if Ghost of Yotei continues to generate revenue and sell well, the clear lesson for PlayStation is that it needs to get more out of its first-party games. Fortunately, Marvel’s Wolverine is approaching with its September release, but since that month and the rest of the year are already packed with new releases, the game does not have an obvious path to instantly selling several million copies.
It will be interesting to see where it ends up in September, and whether it can at least reach first place on that month’s sales chart.
