MOVIE NEWS – There may be no bigger cinematic event this year than the December release of Dune: Part Three, which will conclude Denis Villeneuve’s epic trilogy. Following the first official teaser, a new IMAX 70mm preview has arrived with more glimpses of the cast and several large-scale action sequences. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Alia Atreides in the film.
The release of Dune: Part Three is still more than eight months away, but excitement surrounding the sequel is already enormous. The first official teaser arrived several weeks ago, offering the first looks at new and returning characters while deliberately revealing very little about the story. Now, to announce that tickets are on sale at select IMAX locations, another teaser has been released. The IMAX 70mm preview continues to avoid revealing too much about the narrative, but it includes several new shots of the ensemble and glimpses of some of the film’s larger action sequences. Above all, the footage emphasizes the scope and scale of the third chapter while encouraging audiences to experience it in IMAX 70mm.
The film adapts the events of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, meaning the foundations of the story will not come as a complete surprise to readers familiar with the book. Even so, the new footage remains careful about specific plot developments and focuses instead on large-scale confrontations, monumental imagery, and both returning and newly introduced characters.
In addition to the conflict unfolding on screen, the release date of Dune: Part Three is also creating a major behind-the-scenes battle for cinemas. Denis Villeneuve’s sequel is currently scheduled to open on the same day as Avengers: Doomsday, which not only means some audiences may have to choose between the two films, but also that Marvel’s new release will not have access to IMAX theaters during its domestic opening weekend. These are far from the first two highly anticipated movies to debut on the same day. In 2023, the simultaneous release of Oppenheimer and Barbie generated enormous public attention, partly because their themes and tones were so dramatically different. Barbie ultimately earned more than $1.4 billion worldwide, while Oppenheimer reached $975 million and later won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
What makes the upcoming box-office clash especially interesting is that Avengers: Doomsday will be the first Avengers film since the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame. Since that release, several Marvel Cinematic Universe projects have delivered weaker results, and although many recent films have continued to receive relatively positive reviews, their box-office highs have fallen far below the numbers achieved before Avengers: Endgame.
If Dune: Part Three ultimately performs better at the box office, it could confirm that audiences have significantly cooled toward the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In that case, Marvel Studios may have to reconsider some of its future plans.
