Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has pushed Assassin’s Creed Odyssey back into the spotlight. Players are returning to ancient Greece in large numbers, with many praising Ubisoft’s title as one of the franchise’s best and most convincing historical experiences.
Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited The Odyssey premiered worldwide over the weekend and immediately dominated the box office. The ambitious production has also sparked renewed interest in Greek mythology, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is benefiting from that enthusiasm: the 2018 RPG is trending again as more players return to its version of ancient Greece. Many are revisiting the game to freely explore Greece’s islands, cities, and legendary locations while learning more about the period’s history and mythology.
Returning players have repeatedly highlighted how well Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has aged and how convincingly it still portrays the ancient Greek world eight years after its original release.
Ubisoft Has Embraced the Renewed Odyssey Craze
Before Christopher Nolan’s film reached cinemas, Ubisoft had already begun promoting Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on social media and encouraging players to revisit ancient Greece. The timing gave the game the spark it needed to regain widespread attention. Many community members have since described it as their favorite installment in the franchise, while others are already requesting a Resynced edition. Such an upgrade hardly appears urgent, however, because the game continues to hold up remarkably well.
The renewed attention has also reopened the debate over the best RPG installment in the series. Judging by community reactions, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey remains an exceptionally strong contender thanks to its enormous explorable world, huge number of quests, and dozens of hours of additional content. Completing the entire game and all of its DLC can take more than 120 hours, meaning many players never finished the adventure when it first launched, and Nolan’s movie has now given them another reason to return.
There are also direct thematic connections between the movie and the game. Ithaca is an important location in Christopher Nolan’s production, and the same island features prominently in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, where Kassandra or Alexios is sent to retrieve Penelope’s Shroud for Elpenor during the quest titled “A Small Odyssey.” The game also literally begins at Odysseus’ palace, making parts of the experience feel almost like an explorable continuation of the classical tale.
Although Nolan’s film and Ubisoft’s game adapt different stories, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey provides an excellent opportunity to explore Greek mythology more deeply. Players can learn more about the world surrounding the heroes and myths featured in the film, while the Discovery Tour mode offers guided tours and historical quizzes for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of ancient Greece.
