From Remedy Entertainment’s game (which has yet to turn a profit for the Finns, as we mentioned in the news) we have an excellent comparison.
In the video below from ElAnalistaDeBits, you can see a side-by-side look at the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro versions of Alan Wake 2. It’s a great way to see how the half-generation console update has made a huge difference to the visuals of Remedy’s game. You can see ray-tracing reflections on opaque and transparent surfaces (which are only present on the PlayStation 5 Pro), improved shadows, there’s also volumetric lighting and fog, which is up from Quality Mode on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
In addition, the PlayStation 5 Pro uses essentially the same settings as Performance mode. Thanks to the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler, the image quality is also better than the technology used so far (AMD FSR 2), but graphically it has its drawbacks (artifacts). Still, for the first version of PSSR, this is a great achievement. You can’t really expect it to be perfect right away: after all, Nvidia’s DLSS wasn’t that great on GeForce RTX 2000 cards back in the day!
Two weeks ago, Alan Wake 2 received its new DLC, The Lake House, which already hinted at a sequel to Control (it was already in the news), which is no longer funded by Epic Games Publishing, but by Annapurna Interactive. The Lake House DLC is also a great outline of the Finns’ plans for a shared universe, so like Marvel’s cinematic universe, there will be a connected Remedy universe.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is available today for $700/€800, but that doesn’t include the vertical stand and Blu-ray drive, so those who collect disc games should be prepared for a bit of a premium over that.
