Hironobu Sakaguchi may have spent more than four decades in the games industry, but that hasn’t stopped him from working on a new game.
Sakaguchi joined SquareSoft, Square Enix’s predecessor, in 1983. As a game designer, he worked on titles such as The Death Trap and King’s Knight before becoming director of Final Fantasy in 1987. The JRPG was such a hit for the then struggling Square that it turned around the Japanese company’s fortunes. The latest installment in the franchise is currently Final Fantasy XVI, with the most recent being Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Sakaguchi went on to direct four more Final Fantasy episodes before becoming a producer on Final Fantasy VI through XI. He served as executive producer on several spin-offs before leaving in 2003 to work at his own studio, Mistwalker. Here he created Blue Dragon with Akira Toriyama, the late creator of Dragon Ball, but also worked on Lost Odyssey and The Last Story. His latest game is Fantasian, a mobile RPG that will be released in 2021.
In an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu, Sakaguchi talked about his next project after the release of the updated Fantasian: Neo Dimension for consoles and PC. He couldn’t reveal much more about his mysterious new project, but he did say that he wrote the script a year ago and that the game should be in good shape in about two years. It’s supposed to be a dark fantasy game that he’ll be working on with Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer of Final Fantasy. It’s being developed by the same team that made Fantasian, and around the same time the name Fantasian: Dark Edge was trademarked. As a result, many are speculating that a sequel to Mistwalker’s mobile RPG might be in the works.
However, Sakaguchi had considered retiring from the game industry before announcing his new project, but his attitude has changed. He now views development as a pleasure, not a business. So don’t expect him to return to Final Fantasy.
