Although this is one of Sony‘s key internal development teams, the studio tested how its latest game runs on a different console.
While Sony has ported some of its most popular PlayStation 5 games to PC, a few have yet to make the leap. One such game is Gran Turismo 7. There are no signs that the game will ever be released on other platforms, although a GeForce Now leak in September 2021 suggested that a PC version is in the works. However, Sony and the game’s developer, Polyphony Digital, reportedly ran the game on an unexpected platform: the Nintendo Switch 2. In the latest episode of the Games Mess Decides podcast, Jeff Grubb revealed interesting information about the game.
“I’ve heard that, at some point, PlayStation had Gran Turismo 7 running on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. Now, to be clear, I am not saying it’s coming to the Switch 2. I don’t think it is. But it’s one of those things where Polyphony and Sony were experimenting with the development kits. It makes sense as a benchmark. If you want to see what your future handheld needs to target, you run your most scalable engine on the competition’s new specs. It’s an internal technical test. They want to know how that level of hardware handles their technology, especially since Gran Turismo 7 is already so scalable, from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5,” said Grubb and his co-host, Mike Minotti.
Unfortunately, no further details were revealed about the technical test for Gran Turismo 7, but it would have been interesting to find out how the Nintendo Switch 2 would perform with one of the most visually stunning PlayStation 5 games. However, since Sony is rumored to be working on a PlayStation handheld, there is still a chance that the game will eventually be released in this format. Running Gran Turismo 7 on a system like the Nintendo Switch 2, where it has almost no chance of being released, is not the first time an exclusive game has been run on another system as a technical test.
Years ago, Epic Games had a working PlayStation 3 version of Gears of War 3 that eventually became available online. Therefore, it’s possible that, years later, we’ll be able to see this technical test for ourselves.
