The Next Big Fantasy Franchise Heading for Cinemas Has Been Revealed

MOVIE NEWS – One of the biggest sensations at CinemaCon was the presentation of Children of Blood and Bone, the major new production based on Tomi Adeyemi’s worldwide bestseller. Judging by the footage shown, Paramount Pictures is not simply preparing another fantasy film, but laying the foundations for Hollywood’s next large-scale franchise.

One of the biggest sensations at the recent CinemaCon was the presentation of Children of Blood and Bone, the major production based on Tomi Adeyemi’s worldwide bestselling novel. Based on the preview footage shown there, it seems that Paramount Pictures has not merely created a film, but paved the way for Hollywood’s next monumental franchise, bringing to the big screen a world built around an all-Black cast and rooted in African mythology. The franchise angle is also natural because Children of Blood and Bone adapts the first volume of Adeyemi’s Orïsha trilogy, while the other two books are still waiting for their turn on screen – and, if demand is strong enough, the author would probably not be opposed to writing further installments either.

The film, based on Adeyemi’s bestseller, brings the imaginary world of Orïsha to life, where Yoruba culture and West African mythology intertwine with magic. The heroine of the story is Zélie (Thuso Mbedu), who fights against Saran (Chiwetel Ejiofor), the tyrannical king who has outlawed magic, in order to win freedom for her people.

The film was shot in Africa on original locations, and a genuine parade of stars brings its heroes to life: Oscar winner Regina King, Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) are among the major names in the cast. The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King, The Old Guard), who has already proved that she knows exactly how to send powerful female figures into battle inside fast-moving, muscular stories.
