This time, Capcom effectively provided a five-minute overview of a long-awaited franchise.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword made its debut at the Capcom Spotlight show, where director Satoru Nihei revealed a fearsome new foe that players will face in the highly anticipated swordplay action game. The footage provides a first look at Dohatsu-ten, a terrifyingly fast and bloodthirsty Genma. After entering the mortal realm, this winged warrior from the depths of hell locks blades with the game’s protagonist, Miyamoto Musashi, in an intense boss battle.
Pre-orders for Onimusha: Way of the Sword are now available and include the Sealed Curse sword skin and Lion Dog charm as bonuses. Players can experience the game’s satisfying action by downloading the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo. Unfortunately, this demo isn’t available on the Nintendo Switch 2, even though it will be one of the game’s target platforms. In this regard, fans of the Big N are at a disadvantage compared to those playing on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series (which is about to become even more expensive), or PC.
Fight through bloodbaths of intense swordplay action. Explore the historic Japanese capital of Edo-era Kyoto, twisted by malevolent clouds of malice. Every stage is cloaked in mystery, danger, and intrigue. Battle monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma in this dark fantasy tale. Follow the tale of a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants its bearer the power to slay Genma. Through gritty, blood-soaked brawls, he searches for his reason to fight. What fate awaits him at the end of his journey?
The first game in the Onimusha series debuted in 2001 and tells the story of a young warrior during a time of widespread war in feudal Japan. After acquiring the power of the Oni, he becomes an Onimusha and battles the Genma attempting to conquer the world. The game’s Issen critical counter action mechanic and satisfying swordplay became defining features of the series. With people and events inspired by real-life history cast into an eerie, dark fantasy setting, the characters’ trials and fates paint a unique and engrossing tale that has received widespread acclaim. Building on that success, the series has spawned numerous hit titles and an original Netflix animation. To date, the Onimusha series has sold over 8.7 million units worldwide.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to release on September 25 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
