A PC Port of the First Spyro Game Is Being Made Without AI! [VIDEO]

We are not talking about the remake, but the original game that launched on the PS1 nearly three decades ago…

Spyro, one of the PS1’s most recognizable mascot characters, has a surprisingly strong presence on PC these days. All three original games are available on Steam in remake form through the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Developer Toys for Bob is also working on Spyro: A Realm Beyond, which will be the first entirely new Spyro game in almost twenty years.

However, there is one thing players still cannot do: play the original PS1 versions on PC without emulation. At least not yet. Fans of the series are already working on a PC port of Spyro the Dragon, and it may arrive sooner than expected.

That was revealed by Spyro speedrunner lumilaura, who uploaded a video to X apparently showing Spyro the Dragon running natively on PC.

“You’re not dreaming, this is Spyro 1 running natively on Windows 11 with the brand new OpenPETE decompilation and recompilation hybrid by Amec/tyscorp. It has 60 FPS, true widescreen, no polygon wobble, perspective-correct textures, the works. A Spyro PC port is coming much sooner than we all think.” lumilaura wrote.

The developers asked her to test the port. The PC version is a hybrid of the OpenPETE decompilation project and recompilation work carried out by Amec and tyscorp. The Moby Collective launched the decompilation project last year, making ports like this possible. So far, 88 percent of the game’s functions and 58 percent of its bytes have been converted into source code.

According to lumilaura, the PC port can run at 60 FPS, supports true widescreen presentation, uses perspective-correct textures, and removes the polygon wobble associated with the original PS1 release. She also specifically stressed that the project is being developed without AI, because developers apparently now have to make that clear.

The footage shows Spyro running through a field, collecting several gems, and defeating a few enemies. Lumilaura shared more details on Reddit. Although the video itself was recorded at 60 FPS, the game was reportedly running at 320 FPS and looked beautiful.

The port remains very unfinished, with several visual glitches including camera flashes and strange camera movements that could cause motion sickness. That is why it has not yet been released publicly, but lumilaura believes it could arrive much sooner than people expect. Before Spyro: A Realm Beyond, currently planned for 2027? There is a good chance of that.
