The Trailer for Robert Eggers’s Medieval Horror Film Werwulf Has Arrived [VIDEO]

MOVIE NEWS – Robert Eggers has not slowed down after Nosferatu when it comes to all-consuming mysticism and the artistic depiction of horror. The trailer for Werwulf is now available, and it makes clear that Eggers was serious when he called it his most ominous film to date.

Set in 13th-century England, the story takes viewers to a remote and isolated village community terrorised by a mysterious, bloodthirsty beast. The protagonist is a simple farmer, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who has been bound to the creature by a supernatural curse since childhood.

Eggers once again worked with his trusted collaborators: he co-wrote the screenplay with Icelandic writer and poet Sjón, while Jarin Blaschke returned behind the camera. The visual world uses the director’s familiar, striking imagery, while Eggers’s recurring motifs return as well: burning churches, foggy swamps and blood-filled cauldrons, all contrasted with the symbolism of Christian and pagan belief systems.

The cast of Werwulf is strengthened by more of Eggers’s recurring favourites alongside Taylor-Johnson. Lily-Rose Depp returns after Nosferatu as the protagonist’s wife, along with the brilliant Willem Dafoe.
