After Prey, it looks like another game has a technological disadvantage on the PlayStation 4.
For fighting games, input lag is an important thing, especially in the competitive scene. It’s the time between your button input on your DualShock 4/fighting stick and the button having the action happening on your screen. Nigel Woodall’s solution, which you can see in the video below, is capable of measuring the input delay. „The concept of how this test works is to watermark the screen image at the exact time the controller is being pressed. This is done using optocouplers so that there can be no electrical cross talk between different components of the testing circuit. This should ensure that the signal arrives at the controller at the same time as it interrupts the video signal,” his description says.
The difference between the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One is almost one frame (7.2 against 6.3) – Sony’s console has a 120.5, while Microsoft’s product has a 104.2 ms input delay, respectively. Interestingly, reducing the resolution lowers the input delay on the PS4: the basic PS4 has a 120.1ms, while the 720p resolution had 119.9.
Tekken 7 is still massively behind its rivals. Injustice 2 has a 92.4, Street Fighter V has an 88.6, while Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 has only a 58.2-millisecond input delay – GG’s result is the most outstanding of the crap.
As there is no cross-platform multiplayer, PS4-owners don’t have to worry about the input lag that much, but the technological disadvantage is still there…
