Animal Crossing: New Horizons Hits Incredible Sales

The Nintendo Switch-exclusive game has had a good launch, despite it arriving on the same day as DOOM Eternal (although its Switch port has yet to be released…).

SuperData has published new data about digital sales, and it shows even more how the new Animal Crossing broke records. In its first month of launch, it sold five million copies digitally. With that number, it dethroned the previous record holder, Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII. Keep in mind that this figure only shows the DIGITAL, Nintendo eShop sales! If we had to compare with Nintendo Switch titles, then the new Animal Crossing game has outsold both Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon Sword/Shield in their respective launch months. So one game outsold two (three… two and a half?). That result is simply incredible!

The coronavirus caused many of us to stay at home, which pushed digital sales for other titles as well: DOOM Eternal sold three million copies in March, nearly tripling DOOM 2016’s performance. (Three million copies on three platforms, though – PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC. Same for the previous DOOM title.) Call of Duty: Warzone’s player base showed an outstanding 159% growth to hit 62.7 million players (no wonder, it’s a free-to-play title). Half-Life: Alyx can also be happy: Valve’s game performed one of the biggest VR-exclusive launches, selling 860K digital copies. The digital sales have jumped massively in the first month of Spring, but we have yet to see how the situation changes in April. Console spending hit 1.5 billion dollars in March (up from 883M in February), PC games had a 56% jump to 567 million, and even mobile spending grew by 15% to 5.7 billion dollars.

So the newest Animal Crossing game had a strong start – without a doubt, it has become one of the killer apps of the Nintendo Switch (which has bigger demand than supply now). Let’s take a look at the charts at the end:
