The new console (which looks huge, and it’s true: the PlayStation 5 IS big…), according to Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, is a change that was already expected.
„We think 3D audio is a paradigm shift. We think the functionality of the new controller, which again has to be experienced to be fully appreciated, is a paradigm shift. We think the SSD storage mechanism, and the way that it can help you move between worlds in games and eliminate loading times is a paradigm shift. We went to great lengths to show that off with considerable length in The Ratchet and Clank demo. You saw the way that Ratchet was moving from world to world. In previous generations, the character would have needed to walk down a corridor while loading was going on in the background. Now it just happens instantaneously.
I know previous generations have tended to be about better graphics, you know, greater grunt in the CPU. But we think that we’ve got several features here that are going to enhance the sensory experience of the game and allow developers to do cool and different things,” Ryan told the BBC.
Ryan said that during The Future of Gaming, Sony wanted to show AAA titles for the most part: „We wanted triple-A games that would fully demonstrate the horsepower of the machine. But some of these smaller games are making very cool and innovative use of the new features of the console. So we allowed the show to give a sense of the sheer range of gameplay experience that will be available on PS5. And this is just the start. There are so many more games that we have in development.” He also told CNET the following: „We said that the PlayStation 5 has been designed to play PlayStation 4 games. We’re going through the process with the publishers and developers testing that rather exhaustive library of over 4,000 games. We’re happy with the progress that’s been made.”
On Reddit, we got a size comparison that puts the PlayStation 5 against the Xbox Series X and the previous two console generations. A USB port and a Blu-ray drive are displayed with a red line. The size difference is excruciating:
The PlayStation 5 is bigger than even the first PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, although the Xbox Series X is wider. The PlayStation 5 also feels American-looking, which is another paradigm shift…
eSports Charts analysed the broadcast on June 11, and the total viewers at the peak were 7.2 million across four platforms, with the average viewership being around the four-million mark. Sony has crushed both The Game Awards 2019 and Xbox’ E3 2019 outing.
The PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (the latter lacks the optical disc drive) will launch this Holiday season.
