CD Projekt RED announced how many sales of Cyberpunk 2077 has happened, despite several refunds and returned copies.
After revealing that the first-person perspective RPG has had more than eight million preorders, CD Projekt announced on its website the following: „Based on reports obtained from digital distribution platforms and data collected from physical distributors, it estimates that by 20 December inclusive gamers have purchased over 13 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077. This figure represents the estimated volume of retail sales across all hardware platforms (factoring in returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts), aka the “sell-through” figure, less all refund requests e-mailed directly to the Company by the publication date of this report in the framework of the “Help Me Refund” campaign.” In other words, they did not include the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store refunds!
Kotaku reports that full refunds are now not only provided by Microsoft and Sony for the respective console versions of Cyberpunk 2077 but also Best Buy and GameStop. The site’s claims are based on a memo sent internally to the latter company’s employees. Even opened (and thus, used) copies are eligible for a full refund (it’s usually only for sealed copies), and these were labelled Defective and sent back to GameStop’s warehouses. (And if the game gets the big updates in January and February, will these copies be sold once again?)
And here’s a video that imagines if Cyberpunk 2077 was on PS1. It was published by Anders Lundbjörk, a developer at Dreamon Studios. The style is insanely close to what we have seen in 1995 (when the first PlayStation debuted in Europe): warping textures, unreadable billboards, low-poly NPCs and cars, classic stepping sounds, all that jazz.
Even with that, it seems Cyberpunk 2077 will be a game many people will play, even on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series (via backwards compatibility).
