MOVIE NEWS – The Lucasfilm president finally revealed whether there are any plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, and what awaits the legendary Jedi character in the future.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series was one of the most anticipated Disney+ productions for Star Wars fans, as it brought back Ewan McGregor as the legendary Jedi. The series’ first season debuted on the streaming service in December 2022, and showed Obi-Wan’s life on Tatooine, where he was hiding and watching over young Luke Skywalker. The series featured many old and new characters, including Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, Moses Ingram as a mysterious Jedi apprentice, and Joel Edgerton as Owen Lars.
The series’ first season received mixed reactions from Star Wars fans, but most critics praised McGregor’s performance and the character-driven story. Many hoped that there would be a continuation, as the series raised several open questions and possibilities for Obi-Wan’s character’s future.
However, it seems that these hopes were in vain, as Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, revealed in an interview that there are no plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2. Kennedy said that the series was always meant to be a standalone limited series, and they have no intention of expanding it. Kennedy added that she never says never, because there is always a possibility that Obi-Wan will return in some form in other stories or even a movie. But right now, everyone is focused on what is currently going on in the Star Wars universe.
This news shocked and disappointed Star Wars fans, who would have loved to see McGregor again as Obi-Wan Kenobi. McGregor himself has repeatedly expressed that he would love to do another season, and that he really enjoyed working with director Deborah Chow. McGregor also said that he would like to work with Christensen again, who became very good friends with him over the years.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi first season introduced or revealed several elements that would be interesting in a second season. For example, it showed how Obi-Wan learned from Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) the ability to communicate with him after his death. This was an important part of Obi-Wan’s character development and his relationship with his masters. Another interesting thread was how Obi-Wan dealt with his past and his guilt for not being able to prevent Anakin’s turn to the dark side. The series showed several times that Obi-Wan had nightmares about Anakin and the destruction of the Jedi order. A second season could have given us a better insight into Obi-Wan’s mental state and motivations, as well as how the tense relationship between him and Vader developed, which we saw in A New Hope.
Last but not least, a second season could have also given us more information about the new characters we met in the first season. One of them was Reva (Moses Ingram), who was a mysterious Jedi apprentice who escaped from the Inquisitors. At the end of the series, Reva helped Obi-Wan escape from Vader, and started her own journey. A second season could have followed Reva’s adventures, and told us what happened to her. Another new character was Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton), Luke’s uncle, who did not like Obi-Wan and did not want Luke to become a Jedi. A second season could have helped us understand Owen’s fears and decisions better.
All in all, it seems that Lucasfilm missed a great opportunity by not making a second season of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Although Kathleen Kennedy did not completely rule out the possibility of Obi-Wan returning in some form in the Star Wars universe, it seems that Ewan McGregor wore the brown cloak for the last time. This makes many fans sad and disappointed.
