MOVIE – Everybody loves getting scared, well for those who don’t should not try to watch the Sinister movies. The first movie (at least in its own genre) was very well received, and everyone around the world watched it with fear. No wonder as the scare master Scott Derrickson (When the Earth Stood Still, and Hellraiser Inferno) knows how to raise the blood pressure to the heavens. We won’t have to be disappointed in him for this movie either.
In Sinister II we get to have a look into a mother’s life with his lovely twin kids. They move into a new house, and as usual the house is evil, and we’ll also be have to afraid of the twins in advance. The house that was wrecked by time is the place where the scares begin, with a brutal intensity. The wife and the kids are being abused by the dad, and a detective working on old murder cases also appears at the house. The clichés are ready let us begin!
Those who seen the first movie will pretty much know what to expect when sitting down to watch the second movie. However just as a note we can say that this movie does not reach the first movie’s quality. The movie can be described as (without spoiling too much) that: here is a bloody palm print on the wall, there is an evil possessed kid, there is a pretty flower.. that just became rotted (that is all!?).
No there is more to the movie, but when dismantled to the core, we only get a movie with dumb gore. We also get the same bullshit occultist liturgy that the movie industry has been force feeding us without any new ideas or variety.
Maybe even the first movie could have been a less of a success if it did not have the newness for the viewers. However this newness is the thing that is missing from the sequel. The only thing that was able to uplift the first movie was left out of the second one. In Sinister II we get what the first movie provided, but nothing more.
Be gone demon!
The cast for Sinister II is really weird and funny, as it feels that they do not really are fit for the camera. Maybe the move like they are, however this is not well presented to the viewers, as sometimes I thought I was watching a bunch of people in a reality show. These people sometimes look straight into the camera which is a huge gag. Dartanian Sloan is really bad in this movie, and the twins also provide a lackluster performance for the movie.
I really do not understand that if they are trying to achieve something with a movie, than why bring actors that cannot even act such as the mentioned Dartanian, Howie Johnson, Jaiden Klein and etc etc! The first defense for such choices is because it is an indie movie, but there were actors in indie movies that made us throw our mind away because of their awesomeness. Not here though, here it is way below mediocre.
The movie’s visuals and atmosphere are on par with the first movie. The slightly darkened color tone of the movie, the great sound and music design provide such a horror themed movie that can bring out the chills out of everyone. I think there were only two scenes where the music did not fit the action, but other than those every note that hits our ears is perfect.
Cursed horror genre
Based on the last few years, there are not many horror movies that are great in quality. I’m not talking about gore horror, but those psychological ones that are like Sinister. Somehow the proud leaders of the movie industry have forgotten the core guidelines that allowed them to produce coherent movies.
However Sinister II is a proof that even without these guidelines they can produce a horror movie, it’s just that the horror is about one tiny paper cut that spurts 15 liters of blood, and scares that are plain bad, these would never be used by any other director.
