4A Games and Metro 2033 couldn’t miss out on the event often referred to as the European E3, even though it’s a fact that there won’t be an E3 anymore.

Introduced on stage by 4A Games’ executive producer, Jon Bloch, and co-creative director and audio lead, Pavel Ulmer, the new gameplay trailer reveals more about the dark past and mysterious identity of The Stranger. We see him employ a mixture of stealth and all-out combat to infiltrate a Novoreich-occupied Moscow. The trailer offers players a glimpse of the hauntingly beautiful, hand-crafted environments that await exploration, ranging from the realities of daily life in Sevastopolskaya station to the deadly, irradiated surface of Moscow. It also showcases the thrilling first-person shooter (FPS) stealth action gameplay made possible by the proprietary power of the 4A Engine.

4A Games also revealed the first details of the Metro 2039 Collector’s Edition, which will be available to pre-order later this year. For the first time in the history of the Metro franchise, the Collector’s Edition will enable players to become an integral part of the world by providing them with an authentic, beautifully crafted replica of the mysterious Stranger’s battle-scarred Spartan helmet. Fans can register their interest in the Metro 2039 Collector’s Edition now to be among the first to know when and where they can secure their very own piece of Metro history.

However, it does seem a little desperate that they talked about this at Gamescom, because while the franchise certainly has its fans, they could have shown more of the game itself instead of this collector’s edition, the cost of which is anyone’s guess. Since almost every major game has a collector’s edition, this is no longer surprising. At least we can be glad that 4A Games didn’t jump on the bandwagon — they didn’t switch to Unreal Engine 5 like CD Projekt RED did, for example, but are building on their own technology instead.

Metro 2039 is set to release sometime in February for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. A Nintendo Switch 2 port is unlikely.
