Vanilla World Of Warcraft Is Returning, But Not Officially

Nostalrius‘ legacy is going to continue!

In April, Blizzard issued a cease & desist issue on the Nostalrius server. It didn’t offer a lot, but it was something that got the hearts of veteran players: it offered World of Warcraft in vanilla format. After the takedown, the heads of Nostalrius met with Blizzard’s CEO (Mike Morhaime) and executive producer (J. Allen Brack).

While Blizzard seemed to somewhat support a return to the basics, we can’t expect that change to happen in OFFICIAL form regarding World of Warcraft. Therefore, the Nostalrius team decided to provide the source code and additional tools, plus another server will offer the same things as Nostalrius did.

The source code is sent to Elysium, according to a forum post from Nostalrius, but Elysium also confirmed the changes on Reddit. The current Elysium characters are frozen and saved until the changes are implemented.

Won’t Blizzard issue a C&D on Elysium, too? After all, they named Nostalrius by name.
