We got an unusual comparison here.
Digital Foundry regularly compares the same game on multiple platforms, but up to now, we haven’t really seen the PlayStation 4 getting challenged by the Nintendo Switch. We have to start out somewhere, though. The result isn’t something you’d initially think, though!
On the Nintendo Switch, the game runs at 30 frames per second, while combat scenes can drop as low as 20 FPS. (The frame rate is similar to the Japanese-only PlayStation 3 release.) The video also shows off the PlayStation Vita version (another JP-only port), too, which has a slightly smaller frame drop during combat, making it a bit more of a stable port in a sense (and it feels worse in another scenario – we’ll get back to it later). The PlayStation 4 won this „Musou” (Dynasty Warrior-like) comparison with an almost constant 60 frames per second. The Switch runs almost always at thirty frames per second outside battle, which the PlayStation Vita couldn’t pull off. The Nintendo platform’s performance is almost terrible in handheld mode (it runs on 1080p docked, though).
Dragon Quest Heroes II is out on PS4 and PC on April 25 in the West.
