A promotional tweet backfired.
The Xbox Twitter account was promoting PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds with the image below. It’s intentionally written in past tense: the tweet got deleted, and allow us to tell you why.
The image (in a somewhat different aspect) originated on Reddit, created by Macsterr, who published it about a month ago! The difference is that Xbox marketed the game with a black Xbox One X and a controller, but the base concept is the same as Macsterr’s, who did not get credited. This scenario triggered the scandal.
The Reddit topic quickly got attention: Major Nelson, one of the Xbox characters, had to respond: „Hey guys, I wanted to let you know that this is being investigated. In the meantime, our official channels have pulled down the asset in question. I’ll follow up with the OP /u/macsterr/ once I get more details.” So Microsoft knows about the situation.
Pulling something like this event off right after Christmas is not in the holiday mood…
