PlayStation 5 And PlayStation VR: Together, Yet Separately!

A developer thinks that the new PlayStation should approach the PlayStation VR differently.

WCCFTech is quoting an interview from the official UK PlayStation Magazine, where Harold Vancol, the creative director of Grab Games (John Wick Chronicles, Knockout League) said that Sony should not repeat the mistake that Microsoft has done with the Xbox One. It initially launched with Kinect in the bundle, and they took about a year to sell the Kinect separately (which dropped the price of the console, which was significantly above the PlayStation 4), and the Kinect ended up on the wayside regardless.

„Buying a new console is a big undertaking for a lot of people, and buying the headset that I think people want to see in the future of PlayStation can almost be like buying a new console. So having these purchases separated gives each thing its own time to shine. However, PlayStation 5 and PSVR should be considered essential together,” Vancol says.

He also thinks we’re slowly getting close to the „sweet spot” of the first generation of the VR devices: „A lot of VR experiences are just fundamentally different from the way we’ve all been used to playing, and that’s exciting. As the amount of great content goes up, the price of hardware goes down, which gets us to a sweet spot. I think the first generation of VR is approaching that sweet spot,” he added.

The PlayStation VR is the most successful out of the PSVR/Oculus Rift/HTC Vive trio with its two million sales by December 2017, but that’s way under PlayStation 4’s 76 million lifetime sales (and the PS4 got at least 15 million in just 2017 to compare more fairly with the PSVR…).
