Cory Barlog, the game’s director, revealed a few more details about the upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive.
To Glixel, he revealed why God of War has no subtitle: „[so that it can be an] onramp for everyone. You could play it without having to go back to any of the other God of War games. Your first experience could be this game. But it could also drive you to want to go back.”
It could be weird, as the previous games were based on the Greek and not the Norse mythology, and there, the hack’n’slash was the main focus, not the story (plus, the camera angle was also different). Kratos wasn’t a dad back then. Barlog continues, regarding the story aspect: „The Last of Us is the gold standard. Everything they do at Naughty Dog is. They have the same sort of root desire that I have when I approach a game: To tell a simple story but place complex characters within that story.”
We also learned that God of War would have four difficulty levels. The easiest one will be those who don’t want to worry about the combat, just experience the game’s world and the story. The second and the third ones are the usual normal and hard ones, but the fourth one, Give Me God Of War, deserves mention: it will use a different save, it won’t allow you to lower the difficulty, and it won’t be just more enemies with higher HP. „We did a ton of stuff to make it a genuine challenge, not a cynical increase. Enemies are all changed up. We changed the attack patterns of things; it’s hugely different,” Barlog said.
He also told Daily Star that Sony Interactive Entertainment Santa Monica is planning to include a photo mode after the game launches: „It’s something that we’re looking at. The photo mode has got to be something cool. Like people have raised the bar in photo mode. So, I’m not talking about it much right now because I think we need to do something cool.”
God of War will launch on April 20, exclusively on PlayStation 4.
