Borderlands Isn’t Safe From Steam Review Bombing Either!

…although Borderlands 2 was the first game where Steam‘s new „off-topic review system” (a lot of suspicious activity in a short period notifies the dev/publisher who can delete said reviews if they aren’t about the game itself, and these reviews are not including in the overall review score) is used.

Borderlands 3 is another title which will be a timed exclusive on PC on the Epic Games Store (although only (?) for half a year, not a whole one). On Twitter, SteamDB pointed out that the Steam users did not take this move kindly, and due to Steam’s new system, over four thousand reviews were ignored in the case of Borderlands 2. The users don’t like that the sequel is going to be available on a rival platform first. In short, we see the repeat of Metro: Exodus’ story (which was one of the reasons why Steam implemented this off-topic system).

Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox Software, has responded to it. „Ironically, that this [review] misuse is possible and that Steam has no interest in correcting this misuse makes me kind of happy about 2K’s decision and makes me want to reconsider Gearbox Publishing’s current posture on the [Steam] platform,” he wrote on Twitter.

Chet Faliszek, the co-founder of Stray Bombay, points out that the issue isn’t exactly with the negative reviews: „Review bombing is making it clearer and clearer that players have no effective means of communication with developers where they feel their voices will be heard so they use the one avenue available to them.” And, under PCGamer‘s article, one comment has a wonderful idea: „Steam should add a place where you can rate publishers/developers that release games on there. So say Gearbox would have a quite low score, because of lying, fraud etc with Aliens: Colonial Marines. Would be like Trustpilot in essence.” It’s not a bad idea! In fact, it’s already being made by Steam – here’s 2K‘s page.

So, Borderlands 3, which is out on September 13 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and on the Epic Games Store on PC, has pissed off a lot of people, it seems…
