System Shock Is 25 Years Old; Nightdive Studios Celebrates The Anniversary

Therefore, System Shock will be available in a physical format shortly.

„Big News! We are partnering up with Limited Run Games to bring you a new big-box edition of System Shock! Pre-order will be up [on] October 1st,” Nightdive Studios, the developers of System Shock Enhanced Edition, wrote on Twitter.

On the second image, we can also see that the game’s soundtrack will also be available on two vinyl. At least the soundtrack has a price announced: it is going to cost 35 dollars (but shipping, handling, an importing, will cost more). System Shock Collector’s Edition has no price yet (we intentionally searched for System Shock on Limited Run Games’ website, only to find no results, even though the image itself says to look for more information there…).

The big-box term needs to be explained separately: back in the 90s, PC games tended to come in big boxes, complete with manuals, and other goodies within the box. (Even the PlayStation had some big box game releases..) Back then, the publishers put a lot of care into the packaging and the like, as the Internet wasn’t as widely spread as today, and there were no digital storefronts, so you had no chance to buy the game on Steam; you had to go to a game store to buy the game.

Limited Run Games – nomen est omen – releases physical games in a limited edition, and they tend to do so with not-so-mainstream titles. There are still people who prefer to put their games on their shelves, so in case they want to play something, they wouldn’t immediately have to resort to the Internet to access them.

So System Shock is celebrating its 25th birthday proudly. We wonder if System Shock 3 will be capable of reaching the standards of its predecessors.
