One Of The Key People Behind Silent Hill Working On New Game

Masahiro Ito started something new, but we have yet to see what game will get his involvement.

Ito was the monster designer of the Silent Hill series, and he also had an art directorial post in Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, meaning his work was essential in the games’ success. Now, on Twitter, he wrote the following with a bit of broken English (which makes sense, as he is Japanese): „I’m working on a title as a core member. I hope the title won’t be cancelled. About that, I can tell you nothing yet.” Ito, who was part of Team Silent, previously said that he’d love to work together with Hideo Kojima on Silent Hill (as the survival horror series is owned by Konami, and Kojima worked there), which explains his second sentence.

Or maybe it doesn’t: Ito also tweeted a concept artwork from a cancelled retro sci-fi horror game set in Russia, wishing us a happy new year. This project was cancelled by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Ito previously shared the same image in a now-deleted 2017 March tweet, and it also served as his background image on his website at least since February 2012. About this cancelled game, in February 2018, he wrote that it was under development between 2008 and 2010, meaning it would have been a PlayStation 3 title.

Ito’s work has mostly been in Konami games (the latest one being Metal Gear Survive from 2018), with the one exception being NightCry (2016 – PC, 2019 – PlayStation Vita (!)), which is the spiritual successor to Clock Tower. It was directed by Hifumi Kono, who happens to be the creator of Clock Tower in the 90s.

We don’t know if Ito returns to this cancelled Russian retro sci-fi project, or if something brand new is on the docket for him. Since we have seen his work in Silent Hill (he has PyramidHead as his profile picture for a good reason…), we can be hopeful.
