The Last Of Us: Ellie’s Sexuality Will Not Change

CINEMA NEWS – In HBO’s series, one of the protagonists of The Last Of Us will not have a sudden change in their sexual orientation.

Yesterday, we wrote about how HBO is making a TV series out of Naughty Dog‘s game that first launched in 2013 on PlayStation 3 and a year later on PlayStation 4 in Remastered format. (The sequel is coming in late May, exclusively on PlayStation 4… but if the first game was made available on two console generations, perhaps The Last Of Us Part II will do the same; Sony might be waiting for the right time to announce it.)

In the first DLC of The Last Of Us, Left Behind (which was in The Last Of Us Remastered by default), we saw that Ellie was indeed a lesbian, and Sony and Naughty Dog used this fact in the marketing of the sequel, as she kisses another girl in one of the trailers. HBO’s series will not ignore this fact either.

Craig Mazin, the writer and producer of The Last Of Us, got a request on Twitter: „You all better keep the gay gay please, and thank you. Do not erase that representation, please. Anyways, I’m so excited for this!” Mazin’s response was to the point: „You have my word.” So he never planned to make Ellie a heterosexual out of nowhere, meaning he won’t curb Naughty Dog’s IP in such a way. It’s a fair approach.

Ellie is a rare example of a homosexual protagonist – we don’t see much of them in games, especially not in AAA titles. Naughty Dog is treading new waters, which is good, and while there will be some critical voices, the voice of the majority will likely win again. You need a few (?) pleasant minutes in a post-apocalyptic world. We’re all human, and we have such needs from time to time. You can’t judge that.

The Last Of Us Part II is out on May 29, exclusively on PlayStation 4.
