PlayStation Network Download Speed will be reduced in Europe to ease traffic due to the coronavirus

The European division works with providers to regulate PlayStation Network download speed, although online gaming should not be affected.

The alert for the coronavirus outbreak has created a quarantine situation that spans many countries and regions. With people in their homes, network infrastructures bear an unusual burden to date, which has led companies like Netflix or YouTube to reduce the quality of their content to alleviate this burden. Another company that joins the measure is PlayStation, which has just announced the reduction of download speeds for the PlayStation Network in Europe.

In a statement via his website, the president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, talks about the importance of protecting networks and ensuring that there is full access to them in a situation like today, which is why they are working with internet providers in Europe to help them regulate traffic:

“Sony Interactive Entertainment is working with internet providers in Europe to regulate download traffic and help protect access [to networks] for the entire internet community ”

“We believe that it is important to do our part to tackle stability problems on the internet now that an unprecedented number of people are practising social distancing, and are increasingly dependent on internet access.”

In this sense, from PlayStation, they assure that the measures will be limited only to the download speeds, so the online game should not be affected.

” Players may experience slowdowns or delays in downloading their games, but they will continue to enjoy robust gameplay. We appreciate the support and understanding of our community as we take these steps in an effort to safeguard access for everyone.”,

the company concluded. The truth is that the COVID-19 virus has caused a considerable increase in internet traffic. In video games, for example, content consumption on Twitch has soared in recent weeks, and some mayors in other countries urge their citizens to play the PlayStation instead of leaving their homes.
